Interesting: 1930's Wife?

75

As a 1930s wife, I am
Superior

Take the test!

Interesting little test, indeed.

ETA: H/T to Melissa McEwen at Shakesville for this (Link)

  1. It appears one can be a Very Superior 1930s housewife with no house keeping skills.

But I don't wear red nail polish, my nonexistent stocking seams aren't crooked, and I'm actually fond of my husband.

  2. Wow, I got a 34! :P Although I somehow got a 101 on the husband test. Things like "willingly makes own breakfast" gets you points on that one!

  3. I have a -47, I think some of that is due to the fact that you can't opt out of children related questions, you could probably knock 20 points off right there. Or add 20 for being childfree, I think that would be more in the spirit of the thing.

I revel in my bad woman status, I'm going to stick my cold feet on my hubby as soon as he gets home.

  4. Haha - that's a good one, Vesta. Very fun. I am a 42 - average. Though it's hard to answer some of them when they're really not applicable. I mean, my feet don't get cold, but he puts his cold feet on me to warm them up. And I like it, so that's not a flaw.

Crooked seams and red nail polish lol. That really was fun. Gotta do the husband one later.

  5. Looks liked I'd be a better husband than wife; I'm an average husband (55) and a poor wife (19). The childfree thing has a lot to do with it, I think. Oh, and I don't cook breakfast dressed to the hilt -- heck, I rarely cook breakfast. :)

  6. I have the housekeeping skills, just no red nail polish and no stockings.
I didn't bother to answer the child-related questions since I don't have any kids at home anymore.
I don't cook breakfast dressed to the hilt either, but when I do cook breakfast (on DH's days off), I am at least decently dressed (because he usually wants to go somewhere as soon as we're done eating).
I thought it was an interesting look at marriage in the 30's, compared to marriage now. Some things have changed, some haven't, but I think a lot of it has to do with how we were raised and did our mothers work, did our fathers share in the household chores, and how all of this has been influenced by the media. Certainly a lot to think about.

  7. I'm a 34 poor housewife here. I feel oddly reassured by this.

  8. 78. Mostly because I'm pretty boring.

  9. On further reflection, I too, am a better 1930's husband than wife. Most of it looked to be of the "don't be a jerk" variety, though I'm guessing the children questions must have been big ones. If that's true, I probably got all the way up to very superior just on liking, and being involved with, my kids.

  10. I think the test is rigged. I think men get more points for doing good husband things and less points taken away for doing bad husband things.

  11. Thanks for the link to this test - I scored a 13, utter failure. I think that's because many of the statements were irrelevant to my life - things like I couldn't in good conscience check things like "wears red nail polish". I don't wear red, I wear purple and blue!

It's probably a good thing I never aspired to be a good wife at all!

  12. I thought wearing red nail polish was a negative. Because it's, you know, garish or something.

  13. Scored an 83. Unsure about whether to be happy about this or not...

  14. I'm still mulling over my results and how that relates to my belief that marriage is a partnership (DH quotes the "partnership" thing a lot), and how the test relates to feminism and the changes wrought by that (even though there is still a lot of progress to be made on that front). Certainly a lot of food for thought contained in that little test I took just for fun.

  15. *haha!* I got 30 -POOR.

Good thing it is a)the 21st century and b)I am happily divorced!
    * = D
